Strömsbruk´s Church

på Strömsbruk
Welcome to Strömsbruk and the local church.

The establishment of the church was initiated by what was then the Strömsbruk Parish Hall Foundation (*Strömsbruks församlingshem*). Today, the church is operated by the Harmånger-Gnarp-Jättendal Parish. Strömsbruk Church was consecrated on June 10, 1957; it is a converted grain warehouse that was donated by the company Ströms Bruk AB.

On the coast, just outside the community of Harmånger, lies an industrial area in Strömsbruk that once housed a sulfite mill—now closed and repurposed for other uses. At one time, the population here was nearly as large as that of the main village (*kyrkbyn*).

In 1937, an assistant curate (*kyrkoadjunkt*) was appointed to serve primarily within this industrial area; however, as there was no permanent space for worship, a schoolroom was used instead.

Consequently, the local church sewing society (*kyrklig syförening*) established the Strömsbruk Parish Hall Foundation with the aim of raising funds for a future chapel. It would not be until 1954, however, that a dedicated worship space—located in a basement—could be consecrated.

From then on, church services were held there on the first Sunday of every month. As the number of congregants grew, the space began to prove too small.

There was a grain warehouse in Strömsbruk that was no longer in use, and the management of the mill offered this building to the parish.

The warehouse was situated on a hill in the center of the community, and its size was well-suited for its new purpose. The conversion of the grain warehouse began on October 9, 1956, and the church building was consecrated on Whit Monday, June 10, 1957, by Archbishop Yngve Brilioth. The exterior was painted red, while the corner joints and the frames of the six windows were painted white.

The red paint has been renewed once since the inauguration, and the original roofing material has been replaced with black-painted sheet metal. The tower is topped by a cross and a rooster.
